How does look and is it worth the price?

The reason I ask is because I was going to shoot negative stock for a project and then I recently saw that Roger (moviestuff) from another site will be offering transfers that will be very close to Rank quality. His charge will be $10 for 50ft with a 400 ft. minimum.

    Hers's a link:

BTW, Roger will offer both reversal and negative transfers to tape.

k40 looks great after a rank transfer. it really jumps out if the lighting is good. i shoot mostly black & white, mixing 16mm & super8. if processing wasn't such a hassle with kodachrome i to would shoot more of it. but, i do love black & white.

All of my K40 goes through a RANK. All my S8 does and that is what I use for 85% of my shooting. When shot well and lit well it looks as good as 16mm off of a BetaSP master. I use Cinepost in Atlanta. Good Luck

Oh, very close to a RANK is still not a RANK.

sorry, but the "work printer" will *not* give you "near rank quality". it's an ordinary film chain setup with the only added benefit of perfect sync. very good for sound mix purposes and such, but not for final transfers, like this guy moviestuff says himself...

rank cintel is the company that made the first flying spot telecine machine, so it's the good old xerox story again...

telecine is any device that transfers "cine" to "tele"...or film to a video source. the original telecines were projector mutiplexer design. you have a projector to show the film into a front surface mirror either a condenser lens or screen/ground glass to focus on. then you have a video camera to record image and sound. the good ones like the old rca machines were great. the diference between a multiplexer and a rank type telecine is the rank is a scaner. it also has no "claw" like a projector. from what i remember, they use rubber wheels to move the film forward. a multiplexer records film at real time, a scaner does not.

This is the way moviestuff describes his transfer:

"It is also my intention to offer a high quality TRANSFER SERVICE which will emmulate the Rank speed, as well. This will be for both negative and reversal film and will NOT use the workprinter as the transfer device. Instead, I've designed (on paper, anyway) a different unit with better registration that will use an Ikegami three chip broadcast camera with an enlarger lens and extension tube to shoot right off the surface of the film. In short, there is no conderser lens, no projections lens and the camera's giant zoom lens is replaced with the enlarger lens on the extension tube; kind of a "Super 8 Microscope", if you can imagine it.

The service I am going to offer should be the next best thing to a Rank transfer."

Granted, this is still not the Rank, although his idea should produce a wonderful transfer image and I would suspect that the side by side comparison would not be that much different.

For 400ft @ $80 it will be a great deal. He will transfer to Beta SP, SVHS and maybe miniDV.
